The music of MONOCHROMADDICT, though realized by four like instruments, is full of contrasts and unexpected events. Rather than imposing a sense of deception, the clarinet quartet’s unconventional form provokes listeners’ curiosity. The piece begins with a Bb clarinet in the front of the hall improvising on that which the Bb clarinetist in the back of the hall sounds. The two bass clarinetists begin on Bb clarinets during this improvisation (indeterminate) section standing on opposite ends of the stage. All performers end up sitting together midway through the piece only to seperate at the end leaving a bass clarinetist on the stage to play alone. As the lone bass clarinetists plays, the other three performers flick their wooden reeds in peaceful swells.
